  • 1829: Mr. Sidney Mason, a merchant from Boston, becomes the second U.S. Consul in Puerto Rico. Mason serves as consul until 1835. He continued to be active in the commerce between San Juan and Boston throughout the first half of the nineteenth century.
  • 1833: Charles Chauncy Emerson, brother of Ralph Waldo Emerson, delivers a public lecture about Puerto Rico at the Concord Lyceum. His "Lecture on Porto Rico" is based on his travel to San Juan during the winter of 1831-1832. Another brother, Edward Bliss Emerson had moved to San Juan in 1831 to recover from tuberculosis. He worked for Mr. Sidney Mason, and served as acting U.S. consul in 1834. Edward B. Emerson lived in San Juan until his death in 1834.
